Biography of Jonathan D. Levitan, Esquire

Jonathan is a long time resident of Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. He holds a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School where he was a Comment Editor for the Journal of International Business Law. He is admitted to practice before the state and federal courts in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the State of New Jersey and the State of New York.

Jonathan maintains an outside general counsel law practice through The Law Office of Jonathan D. Levitan, LLC. His practice specializes in providing labor and employment law services. He has been actively involved in providing guidance to the skilled nursing industry, pediatric day care facilities, nonprofit home care agencies, independent supportive living agencies for people with developmental disabilities, the hospitality industry, construction industry and financial services sector.

Earlier in his career, Jonathan was an associate at Kleinbard, Bell & Brecker, a boutique labor and employment law firm located in Philadelphia, before becoming General Counsel to Seniors Management-North, Inc., a skilled nursing (including pediatric units) home and pediatric daycare management company, which managed facilities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida and the District of Columbia. As General Counsel for over 20 years, no issue was outside his catchment, whether it was protection of the corporate form, regulatory compliance, the survey process, labor and employment issues, health and professional liability insurance, and the negotiation of complex commercial contracts.

Jonathan spearheaded the company’s labor and employment efforts. He first chaired union negotiations, responded to organizational campaigns and strikes, managed the grievance and arbitration process, and handled general collective bargaining agreement administration. Often providing guidance before job actions were taken, Jonathan managed the process at the root level, resulting in only minimal arbitrations and unfair labor practice charges. Equally involved in managing employment and wage and hour issues, Jonathan eliminated or greatly devalued potential claims at their incipient stages resulting in only a handful of employment lawsuits over the years – on many of which he achieved summary judgment.

Jonathan devised and led the company’s response to the litigation tsunami that swept the skilled nursing industry in the late 1990s in states like Florida and more recently in D.C., PA and NJ. Jonathan managed uninsured, large SIR/deductible claims, and developed strategies to work with insurance companies to better control litigation expense, outcome and ultimately premium.

More recently, Jonathan worked for Rytes Company, a New York based corporate regulatory compliance company that serves the healthcare industry, and Rosenbaum & Associates, P.C. He has been the lead counsel defending a multi-party collective action wage and hour lawsuit venued in the Southern District of New York.

Jonathan is particularly proud of developing and instituting layered systems of education, review and self-evaluation to ensure compliance and employee buy-in with the vision of the organization.

Jonathan’s approach starts with his belief that small problems grow into big problems if not appropriately and timely addressed – small leaks can eventually sink even the mightiest ship.
